Huzzah! (Broadly)

Computer appears to have come back up and fixed itself of its own accord. All seems well, bar two minor snags; first, the BIOS seems to have forgotten to support USB keyboards, so I’ve had to plug my spare, via an ATX to PS2 converter, into the PS2 and try not to let it fall down the back of the tower. Secondly, when I ctrl+alt+del, it gives me the Windows security type box in nasty spazzy tellytubby mode, but everything else seems fine.

Indeed, so fine was it, that I played Nethack for a full half hour yesterday, without it rebooting itself once!

Bollocks.

[Sorry, I know that’s long and probably Abnib-unfriendly, I just wanted to keep tabs on how I was doing in terms of Blog-worthy scores…

Although, actually, I think most of my old scores are LJ or in the Missing EQ Archive, but still.]

Anyway: work.

I didn’t see any bottles of holy water, I’m usually overloading myself with them! I’m practically addicted to picking up ‘useless’ potions, diluting them and converting them over. It comes in hadny when I face liches but I’m usually a bit too dead on account of not being able to move quickly enough ‘cos I’m carrying too many potions.

    Anyway, congrats.

    Ish.

    Y’know what I mean, right?

  2. On September 21, 2007 Mister JTA says:

Well, I broadly know in theory that holy water is good for, uh, stuff. And you can get it if you try a water prayer.

I probably had a bottle of it once, but I don’t think I’ve ever made a specific effort to get the stuff; I tend to play with slightly less finesse than I ought to, I think; give me Mjollnir, and a low enough AC and I will move a fat pile of corpses to the nearest altar and sacrifice like buggery until I get some other cool artefact.

I did have Trollsbane, at one point, but I think I sold it for a scroll of taming and a scroll of genocide.

But, then, I always play as a Valkyrie, these days. Started as a ranger, found that too hard. Attempted monk a couple of times and got battered, so I switched down to the more tank-like races. It’s probably had a severe effect on my playing style; I went from having thirty-odd hp at level 4 or so to having sixty-ish…

Most of the times when I get killed, these days, it’s because I’m just bashing “4” and failed to notice that I’d just plowed through six wood elves and started hitting an owlbear, or something equally thick.

(Not this time, though, this time some bloody lich spawned me a room full of dragons and demons and other bastardly things.)

One of the really useful things about holy water is that you can turn a scroll of genocide into a blessed scroll of genocide and gewt rid of every bloody evil Liche. I hate them bastards.

i’m a beginner… can you tell me how to kill bats ?

  5. On November 10, 2007 Mister JTA says:

    Hey Chewie,

I think it depends on what you’re playing as (the classes fall roughly into four levels of “easy,” “medium,” “hard,” and “you’re not going to make it into double-figure levels”). I tend to go with Valkyries, who are built for fighting and relatively easy.

The trouble with bats, as I recall, is that they’re horribly fast, so if you’re a low level (and you’ve not got high skill in your main weapon – don’t forget to key in #enhance every time your skill goes up, btw; it took me about eighteen months of play before someone told me about that) they die before you can batter ’em.

Magic users can get ’em with ranged spells, I imagine, or a class such as ranger would be able to get them with bows & arrows, or similar. Some classes, including Valkyrie, get speed boosts at certain levels, which help, and so would boots or a potion of speed.

Beyond that, though, I think there’s probably a lot of luck, although you could try chucking stuff at it, as if it were a Floating Eye, or something.

O, and careful eating the corpses; they’re not great.

    Good luck!
